5-1-11

We woke up this morning to snow. Lots of falling snow! Jack was so excited he jumped right outside to catch some on his tongue. Even Lucca was curious and wanted to check it out. It was quite a sight to see...beautiful red rock mountains with snow falling all around. Not something I dreamed I would see on this trip. But snow meant a couple things for us. One, it was COLD. I did pack some clothes for cold weather but not for 30 degrees and snowing! Two, that our plans to go to Taos, which is much higher in the mountains, would have to be changed. After getting a visit from our camp host who told us that Taos was supposed to get up to five inches and stay cold for the next few days, we knew it was time to leave New Mexico. We really enjoyed the last few days here and will most likely come back to this area another time.

We got on the road heading east hoping to just get as far as we could. After driving three hours in falling snow we stopped for lunch and thought we could make it to Tucumcari which is 30 miles from the Texas border. We made it there by 3:30 and everyone was doing great so we decided to test our luck and push on through to Amarillo, Texas. Two hours later and not a peep from anyone, we made it around 6:30. ( we forgot about the one hour time change) After checking into a pretty nice Rv park we had to head out to find some dinner. The first place closed it's doors right as we were about to walk in. We got a little nervous that other places would be closed also, Amarillo is a very small town and it was 8 on a Sunday night. But we found a Chevy's like Mexican restaurant and all enjoyed a nice dinner together.

After that we went back home, put the kids to bed and I took the longest shower to get the last four days of shower free camping off. Now I will go to my nice clean bed and sleep well!

Who knows what Amarillo will bring tomorrow?
