7-2-11

Today we managed to leave the campsite earlier than we normally do. We actually hit the road by 10. Our destination today was the drive into the Rocky Mountain National Park over the Trail Ridge Rd. The road takes you above tree line to over 12,000 feet. We crossed the continental divide and saw some amazing vistas.

We stopped several times for the kids to get out and play in the snow.

Which was still packed in over 6 feet high in some places. The warm days are melting the snow at amazing rates and there were little creeks and waterfalls everywhere.

At the top of the ridge we stopped and admired an elk herd that was grazing and resting in the alpine grass.

Down the other side we got a quick glimpse of a mother moose and baby mooseling. We had lunch at grand lake and then made the trip in reverse back to our campsite. At dinner time we were fortunate to have a surprise visit from Jean, John, Billie, and Jerry who were out on a motorcycle ride. After a nice visit it was bedtime for the kids...
